Write,

To write,

Left to write,

Is left to write,

That is left to write,

All that is left to write,

That is left to write,

Is left to write,

Left to write,

To write,

Write.

I Used To ... But Now

I used to be elsewhere, but now I am here.

I used to write shopping lists, but now I write poetry.

I used to be debatable, but now I am completely out of order.

I used to think like you, but now I have my own address book.

I used to be an open string, but now I tend to fret.

I used to Give Way, but now I merge into the centre lane.

I used to be British, but now I am World-ish.

I used to be five-to-twelve, but now I am half-past three.

I used to be centred, but now I am left justified.

Mirrored

You

are more

than meets

the

I.

Eyes,

f  r  a  m  e  d.

For now.

Your depth

of field,

filed

but

fully focused.

You

are mirrored

in time,

catching the light

and

standing in front

of yourself,

with

the whole world

behind

you.

The truth is a beautiful place

where I can breathe

freedom.

Vertigo

This grief

Clings like an edge.

It does not look

Down,

Because there is nothing to see.

It breathes the thick air,

Waiting for the next move.

It does not conclude anything.

Where would it go?

It has no rising ambition.

Not like anger.

With time scaling itself

In another direction,

It's difficult to draw breath.

Even in silhouette.

Too fine a line,

Beside that drop.

This grief

Clings like an edge.

It does not look

Down,

Because there is nothing to see.

It breathes the thick air,

Waiting for the next move.

It does not conclude anything.

Where would it go?

Up.

How To Write A Poem

With Selina Tusitala Marsh,

Poet Laureate of New Zealand.

Step 1:   Write more quickly now.

Step 2:   Write inside the silence.

Step 3:   Write without permission.

Step 4:   Write away from the finishing line.

Step 5:   Write for the heart of the beat.

Step 6:   Write for the breath.

Step 7:   Write.
